Described as a feminist neo-western, the film follows a young Indonesian widow who embarks on a journey for justice after she is attacked by robbers and driven to kill several men.

Indonesia has picked feminist neo-western Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts as its submission for the best foreign-language film race at the Oscars.

The selection was made by the Indonesian Academy Selection Committee, chaired by veteran actress and producer Christine Hakim.

The third feature from female Indonesian filmmaker Mouly Surya, Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival& #039;s Directors’s Fortnight section in May. It later won the NETPAC award for new Asian cinema at Poland’s Five Flavors Asian festival.

Set on the island of Sumba in eastern Indonesia, the film follows a young widow (Marsha Timothy), who embarks on a journey seeking justice and empowerment after she is attacked by robbers and driven to kill several men.

THR critic Boyd van Hoeij described the film as "an austere yet stylish revenge romp as well as a starkly told tale of a determined and strong female character who is mad as hell and is not going to take it anymore." He summed up the picture as simply "kick ass."

The film was produced by Indonesia’s Cinesurya and Kaninga Pictures, along with France’s Shasha & Co-production, Thailand’s Purin Pictures, Malaysia’s Astro Shaw and Singapore-based streaming platform HOOQ.

Sales agent Asian Shadows has sold the film to more than 40 territories, with theatrical release s set to come in the U.S., U.K., Italy and Canada.
